Turnip Greens
Artist: Seitu Jones
Location: Nashville Farmers’ Market, 900 Rosa L Parks Blvd, Nashville, TN 37208
Suspended from the green trusses in the market house of the Nashville Farmers’ Market, Turnip Greens welcomes visitors and community members alike into the market from the newly renovated North Entrance.
Dedicated on November 2, 2019, at the Market'sannual Turnip Greens festival, the large-scale aluminum sculpture features anoverflowing bushel of turnip greens and serves as an iconic suspended sculpture for the market house. Seitu Jones, a seasoned public artist based in St. Paul, MN, was a part of Metro Arts’ 2018 temporary exhibition Build Better Tables where he installed a neighborhood hearth at Brooklyn Heights Community Garden. While here in Nashville, Seitu became immersed with the community around the farmers’ market and was inspired by his experiences. Seitu also reflects on a past art exhibition at Fisk University that featured an agricultural painting by the great American agronomist, George Washington Carver. Dr. Carvers mix of agriculture and art has not only served as inspiration for Turnip Greens but has also influenced Seitu’s public art practice as a whole.
One year later, Seitu has fostered relationships with several Nashvillians, including the artists of Norf Art Collective. Inspired by their incredible talent and passion for their community, Seitu enlisted Norf to install their mural, Adanedi, as a part of his project.
